I want to tell you about an interaction I witnessed when I was out one night a while back:
A guy was trying to close out his tab at a bar, and the super cute bartender said something to him that I couldn’t quite hear.
Judging from his body language and facial expressions, though, I could tell she thought he was “gaming” her.
“Are you going to say please?” she asked loud enough for me to hear.
He looked at her, confused, and stuttered through a number of half-responses.
“Uhh…,” he mumbled. He was definitely drunk, but more nervous than anything, given the wide look in his eyes.
So she said, “Look, let me teach you how to be more polite when asking someone for something.”
She reached over the bar, playfully grabbed him, and said some things to him. At this point, he was basically her ragdoll.
When she finally handed him the bill and a pen, he signed it… and then he took out a $20 bill from his wallet and gave it to her.
This chick totally hustled him — plus, she was a cutie.
You might hear this story and instantly assume that this is the kind of girl who’s impossible to take home… in fact, most guys would probably agree.
But as I later learned, that wasn’t the case at all.

After closing that other guy out, the cute bartender walked over to my buddy and me. I asked her about that other guy.
She laughed and made some comment about how “thirsty and idiotic” some drunk guys can be… but then her haughtiness faded away. She could tell we weren’t suckers.
And her tune really changed when she found out we work at a club downtown.
At first, she gave me more attention than my friend (he was on his phone)… though I noticed her eyes would flick toward him, even when she was talking to me.

She left to go take care of something, but when she came, back, I suddenly heard her say:
“You know, you’re really cute.”
I looked over — she was staring at my friend. I turned to him, and our eyes met.

Here’s how the conversation went after that:
Her: “If you weren’t so young, I would definitely flirt with you…”
Him: “I definitely am!”

Him: “I’m 24” (He was actually 23 at the time, but told me later that he thought 24 would be more attractive to her.)
Her: “Yeah, definitely too young.” *Pause* “But those dimples…”
Him: “How old are you?”
Her: “31.”
Him: “I could show you a thing or two…”
Her: “I… doubt that.”
That’s Not All…
At this point, she kind of sounded like the drunken guy she schooled earlier.
My buddy smiled and looked down at his phone — of course, her eyes hadn’t left him.
I went to the bathroom to give him some space (plus, the seal had been broken). They were still talking when I came back.
Then this happened:
Her: “Hmm, we could actually have a lot of fun.”
Him: “Yeah, maybe we could… I have your number, right?”
Her: “Yeah” (She sounded really excited when she said this.) “Yeah… I kinda just want to sit on your face.”
He must have gotten her number when I went to the bathroom — props. And clearly, she was feeling him.
(And yes, they definitely did go home together that night.)
What Every Guy Should Know Before Flirting With a Hot Waitress Or Bartender
The story of my friend isn’t some one-off situation — this actually happens pretty often. But before you go out and try to get with your local bartender, there are three things you should keep in mind:
1) This woman flirts for a living.
This is how bartenders can work a few nights a week and still make bank. How do you tell the difference? Experience and by following my advice.
2) She gets hit on all time.
Her guard is up, and she knows every angle of approach.
3) She’s probably busy and has less time for a legitimate conversation.
So how do you succeed despite these circumstances?
Get her to pick you up — seriously.
Because she’s at work, serving you drinks, she has the authority in this situation.
If you’ve never worked as a bartender, you don’t know how powerful you feel behind the bar.
You feel like the king of your castle, and if someone tries to invade your space, they’re not respecting your authority.
Getting her to pick you up, then, is all about respecting her space, letting her do her work, and not coming off as too desperate.

- If she challenges you, laugh it off and ignore it…
- Tease her (like my friend said “I could show you a thing or two”). But don’t insult her or disrespect her in any way…
- Ping her with interesting comments. With one bartender I slept with, I commented on the soccer match playing on the television behind her. This prompted her to say how soccer players are “p***ies.” I asked her if she plays anything; she told me she played field hockey. There’s conversation. If you’re from out of town or are about to travel somewhere new, mention this…
- If she shows sudden interest, accept it with a grain of salt or deflect it (like with my friend responding to her compliment with “is she serious?”); this is how you sift through the women who are genuinely interested and those who are playing you for a trick. It might even convert women who were previously uninterested…
- If she gives you a discount or gives you anything for free, she (probably) likes you a lot…
- “Honey,” “sweetie,” and other terms of endearment mean nothing. Appreciate her femininity, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s genuine interest…
- Only verbally express interest once if she hasn’t yet given you attention. And when you do, make it unique. Her hairstyle, the way she handles people, etc….
- The rest of your interest should be non-verbal. Try smirking, giving her “shy eyes” (looking at her and then away, like my friend did), or “curious eyes” (if she says something challenging, skeptical, etc). It’s all about nuanced body language…
- Play hot and cold with your interest. I usually don’t play hard to get, but in this situation, it can work really well…
- Don’t ever interrupt her as she works or if she looks too busy. Communicate with eye contact and maybe hand gestures. If she likes you, she’s going to pay attention to you…
- Have excellent fundamentals. Dress well, take care of your skin, and sit comfortably and confidently. By nailing the basics, you’re setting yourself up for success…
- Finally, try working in the nightlife industry. Learn how these women work and join their inner circles…
By following these rules, you’ll earn her compliance, her attention, and her respect.
And from there, asking her out is a breeze.
She’s Interested…Now What?
Once you have her interest and attention, you’re ready to ask out a girl who works at the bar. What next?
First, you should find out what time she gets off. If she’s really interested, she’ll smile and tell you.
The most important thing to remember is to be as direct as possible. So if you can’t stay until the end of her shift, at least get her number.
You could also try suggesting that you get coffee sometime.
At the end of the day, treat her like any other girl — if you don’t plan on staying up late enough to meet her after work, just suggest a regular date.
